The Anatomy of a Perfect UK CV
How to layout your CV so recruiters scan it in under 6 seconds.
In the UK, recruiters get hundreds of applications. To survive the first scan, your CV should be maximum 2 pages long, clean, chronological, and written in a professional sans-serif font (like Arial, Calibri, or Inter).
Key Sections in order:
- Contact Details: Your name, phone number, email, and generalized location (e.g. “Manchester, UK”). Do not include date of birth, photo, or full address to protect yourself from bias and fraud.
- Professional Profile: A short, strong statement summarizing your skills and drive (3–4 sentences).
- Work Experience: Your career history starting with your most recent job.
- Education & Training: Your degrees, GCSEs, or equivalent courses (like ESOL or First Aid).
- Key Skills: Bullet points highlighting digital proficiency or languages.
Do This:
- Use bullet points instead of heavy blocks of text.
- Ensure margins are consistent and wide.
- Save and send the file as a PDF so the layout doesn’t break.
Avoid This:
- Do not write the words “Curriculum Vitae” at the top (your name is the header).
- Do not write in the first person (avoid starting with “I did this…”).
- Do not include references directly on the page (use “References available upon request”).
Crafting Your Professional Profile
The 30-second elevator pitch at the top of your CV.
Your **Professional Profile** is a brief introductory paragraph positioned right under your contact details. This is your chance to hook the employer. It should answer three core questions:
Who are you?
Your professional identity (e.g., “A highly organized and customer-focused professional…”)
What can you offer?
Your strongest skills or achievements (e.g., “…with 3+ years of experience in retail spaces…”)
What are your goals?
Your target next step (e.g., “…seeking to bring dedication to a collaborative customer service team.”)
Bad vs. Good Example:
⚠️ Unfocused & Weak:
“I am a friendly person looking for a job in your company. I work hard and I am a good team player. Please give me an interview.”
✅ Focused, Metric-Ready & Professional:
“A reliable and customer-oriented retail assistant with over two years of experience in high-volume UK grocery environments. Proven ability to handle point-of-sale systems accurately, maintain immaculate stock levels, and support colleagues under pressure. Dedicated to delivering friendly, helpful service to local shoppers.”

Many job-seekers write descriptions that read like a dry list of chores. Employers don’t want to just know what you were *supposed* to do; they want to know what you **actually achieved**.
Transforming Your Bullet Points:
Before (Duties List):
“Responsible for cleaning shelves and checking food dates.”
After (Achievement Style):
“Maintained high stock rotation standard, reducing local food waste by 12% through thorough daily expiry monitoring.”

Situation
Set the scene. Where were you working and what was the initial setup?
Task
What was the goal or specific problem you had to overcome?
Action
Exactly what steps did *you* take? (Focus on your own actions, not the team’s).
Result
What was the positive outcome? Quantify the result if possible.
